“Building on its commitment to the peaceful settlement of disputes and the regulatory role of the UN in the area of peace and security, Morocco has steadily contributed to the UN peacekeeping operations (…) We will spare no effort to continue our contribution,” Loulichki told a Security Council meeting devoted to UN peacekeeping operations.
The diplomat stressed the need to find innovative solutions to the new challenges facing peacekeeping operations, while remaining “committed to the founding principles of the UN peacekeeping process, especially respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, the consent of the parties, impartiality in the implementation of the Security Council mandates, and the non-use of force except in self-defense.”
Loulichki deemed insufficient the level of cooperation between the Security Council, troop- and police-contributing countries and the UN Secretariat in supporting peacekeeping operations.
He considered that, despite some progress, the full potential of such triangular cooperation “is far from being achieved”, unless more efforts in the area of training and know-how sharing are made.
