Students at University of Ibn Zohr Agadir’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities were disappointed to know that the exams scheduled from June 11 through 14 were suspended, without any prior notice.
The suspension of the scheduled exams was due to a higher education teachers’ strike in solidarity with their colleagues who were attacked by some students caught cheating on exams.
The two teachers in question were attacked aggressively and one of them was locked in an auditorium for hours in a desperate situation.
These irresponsible, outrageous behaviors have created an atmosphere of discontent in the ranks of teachers of higher education who are still bitterly invoking the attack of one of their colleagues during the fall session of this year.
It is noteworthy that these events have been passed in a disgraceful silence and almost absent reaction on the part of all student factions, in particular those who fall under the National Union of Students of Morocco. In principle, they should be the first to denounce such unmannerly behaviors, and set canals of communication with other students in order to ensure that they are fully conversant with the events that resulted in the suspension of exams.
Unfortunately, more students resort to cheating on exams to attain good records in a total absence of enough assistants and practical measures, on the part of the administration, that may secure anxiety-free atmospheres in exam classes and the desired equal opportunities for all.
Responsibility for what is happening is to be fallen on the shoulders of the presidency of the university which is required more than ever to provide the necessary protection frameworks within the institution for both university staff so that they can perform their duties in pedagogical conditions, and for students in order to attain the goals of which they are in university that should be a beacon for science and space for constructive dialogue.
It is high time those in charge of education in Morocco, precisely higher education, came up with strict and practical measures to deter any attempts to breach public order on the university campus, lecture halls and university squares. The Squalid conditions that characterize Moroccan universities have to come to an end.
