The e-commerce sector in Morocco has truly boomed in the last two years and has provided an easy alternative for Moroccans to shop, pay their bills and utilize other online services from the comfort of their homes.

According to the FNEM (the National Federation of E -commerce in Morocco), the total amount of transactions carried out online “e-commerce and distance selling,”-including payment by credit card-reached a turnover of over MAD 504.2million (US $58 million) in 2011. This shows a remarkable growth of 72% in comparison with 2010.

The report added that the number of customers shopping online reached 102,000 by the end of 2011. This is in comparison to a total of 16.3 million internet users, showing a large growth potential for the industry.

The increase of the online commercial transactions is logical with the emergence of many websites dedicated to shopping with increasingly attractive offers over the past few years.

The FNEM cited over 670 active e-commerce websites in Morocco which have completed a total of over 1.29 million online transactions in 2011. This reveals a 230% increase from 2010 and  an average online transaction of 750 MAD ( US$87).

Established Sept. 5, 2011, The (FNEM) National Federation of E-Commerce in Morocco was created in order to defend the actors of e-commerce, to unite and represent all stakeholders of e-commerce and sales remotely.

E-commerce has existed in Morocco since 2008, the date in which the banks have established a secure payment system by credit card. In 2010, 223,000 transactions were recorded by credit card on the internet.

The “E-Commerce Awards,” was organized by the National Federation of e-commerce in Morocco in partnership with Expert Events. The awards were held on March 30, 2012 and aimed to promote and reward the best innovations in the field of e-commerce over the past year. The competition is open to any operator of e-commerce, service provider or supplier of services in Morocco.
