The Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, José Manuel García-Margallo, said Sunday that Spain expects “a new U.S. resolution” to renew the mandate of the UN mission in the Sahara and “could get the consensus” of the members of the Group of Friends of the UN Secretary General on the Western Sahara.
“We expect a new resolution of the United States that could get the consensus of all members,” said Mr. Margallo in a statement to the Spanish press after his meetings with various Jordanian officials in Amman.
Asked about Madrid’s position on the U.S. proposal, the Minister was keen to point out that the Group of Friends of the Sahara consists of France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia and Spain.
The new U.S. proposal “has not been accepted by two members of this group,” which “makes it difficult to adopt, knowing that the rule in the group is consensus,” the head of Spanish diplomacy was quoted by Spanish news agency EFE as saying.
It is worth noting that the leading news paper El Pais reported Saturday night on its website that Spain considered “non-viable” the proposal of the United States to extend the mandate of MINURSO to include monitoring human Rights in the Sahara, a proposal strongly rejected by Morocco.
