Rabat – Morocco is set to strengthen its scientific cooperation with the European Union after the European Parliament approved on Wednesday an updated framework governing the country’s participation in the Euro-Mediterranean research and innovation initiative.
The resolution, adopted during a plenary session on Wednesday in Strasbourg, amends and supplements the existing cooperation framework governing Morocco’s involvement in the Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA).
Launched in 2018, PRIMA was established as a Euro-Mediterranean partnership that finances joint research and innovation projects aimed at developing sustainable solutions to shared regional issues. The initiative brings together European Union member states and several countries from the southern Mediterranean, including Morocco.
This revised agreement updates the legal framework regulating Morocco’s involvement in the initiative. It ensures continued collaboration on research projects addressing some of the Mediterranean region’s most pressing environmental and agricultural challenges.
With climate-related challenges transcending national borders, Morocco is increasingly turning to collaborative research to address water management, sustainable agriculture, food security, and climate resilience.
The North African country has maintained an active participation in PRIMA since the program’s launch by collaborating with European and regional partners on scientific research designed to improve environmental resilience and sustainable resource management.
More than a procedural update, the move reflects the growing importance of scientific collaboration as Mediterranean countries confront increasingly complex environmental challenges.
