The legendary American journalist Barbara Walters confirmed on Sunday that she will retire next year after over 50 years in TV journalism.
The 83-year old ABC veteran and co-host of the famous television program “The View”, said in a statement that she was happy with her decision.”
“I’ m very happy with my decision and look forward to a wonderful and special year ahead both on “The View and with ABC News. I created “The View and am delighted it will last beyond my leaving it”.
ABC News said that Walters will step down next summer and that she will formally announce her decision on Monday’s episode of “The View”.
Barbara Walters will remain Executive Producer of “The View”, the show she created in 1997.
In 1976, Walters became the first female anchor on an evening news program in America. Three years later, she became a co-host of the 20/20 television show.
Walters was well known for her groundbreaking interviews with key public figures in America and prominent leaders throughout the world, such as Fidel Castro, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israel’s Prime Minister Menachem Begin.
As a response to a question on what her next projects will be in the future, Barbara said:
“I do not want to appear on another program or climb another mountain, I want instead to sit on a sunny field and admire the very gifted women and- OK, some men too- who will be taking my place.”
