Taroudant, Morocco – At the Conference on Investment Security in the Mediterranean held on  Monday, in Paris, Mohamed El Ouafa, Morocco’s Minister of General Affairs and Governance, said that the government is “seriously considering” the launch of two giant infrastructure projects in Morocco.

According to Maghreb Agence Press (MAP), the minister announced Monday in Paris that the government is studying the feasibility of two major projects related to the transfer of surplus water from north to south and building the Tishka tunnel.

The first project aims to transfer via large pipes the drinking water and water for agriculture from the water surplus basins in the north to the southern areas of the kingdom where water is in short supply.

The second project aims at linking the Ouarzazate region and its remote oasis with Marrakesh via a tunnel under the High Atlas Mountains that will guarantee a rapid transit network between the two regions and will save commuters hours of risky travel on the tortuous roads up Mount Tishka.

Minister El Ouafa said that the tunnel under Mount Tishka would open up vast areas of Morocco, including the large oasis area of the southeast.

Road users are hoping that the long awaited project will make commuting between Ouarzazate and Marrakesh much faster and safer.
