Taroudant- The famous magazine “National Geographic” featured a photo of the Erg Chebbi desert of Merzouga at the edge of the Sahara in Morocco second best shot in its August photo galleries.
The photo taken for some far camel riders amid gigantic golden dunes of sand ranked second among the 30 best National Geographic photos of August 2014.
Covering an area of 50 kilometers, Erg Chebbi is one of the largest ergs in the kingdom located in the south east, lining the Algerian border.
Merzouga is one of the best tourist destination for desert lovers and those travellers who love to observe the sun rising over the dunes in very majestic moments.
Starting from June, and during the warmest part of the year, Erg Chebbi becomes the famous hub for Moroccans, who enjoys the wonderful experience of being buried neck-deep in the hot sand for a few minutes.
Some Moroccans believe that being buried in the burning sand for a few minutes many times at noon will surely heal them from the chronic rheumatism they suffer from.
With its unique landscape and very high dunes, Erg Chebbi in Merzouga is one of the most tourist attractions in the kingdom.
