Marrakech – Notwithstanding that Morocco’s national team has qualified, the Moroccan National Association of American Football (ANMFA) announced on Friday that the team will not participate in the next World Championship scheduled to take place in July in the United States.
Ahmed Ben El Cadi, president of the ANMFA, who had attended the Executive Committee of the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) to address the issue of Morocco’s participation, said that “The conditions were not adequate for the participation of the Moroccan team,” according to the official website of ANMFA.
Ben El Cadi further explained that the decision was caused by the recent cancellation of the host country (Sweden) in favor of the United States which resulted in a significant increase in participation fees, according to the website.
Although the team received much encouragement, no one wanted to cover the participation fees, according to Ben El Cadi. He also noted that prominent world American football nations such as Germany and Austria (finalists in the last European Championship) will not take part in the upcoming world championship.
The President of the ANMFA said that ANMFA would carry on its efforts to promote and develop the sports throughout Morocco.
“Participation in the World Cup would obviously have been an excellent catalyst for the sport in Morocco, but we must not forget that the purpose behind it is to develop the sport and consolidate our structure,” he added.
