Rabat – King Mohammed VI of Morocco is set to visit Laâyoune in the so-called Western Sahara in southern Morocco to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Morocco’s Green March.

According to daily Al Massae in its Monday October 19 edition, the monarch will be present at the November 6 celebration of the Green March in city of Laâyoune.

Local authorities and security forces are on alert expecting the King’s arrival to the Sahara where he will also be revealing new information concerning the region.

“King Mohammed VI in Laayoune to announce unpublished decisions about the Sahara,” the daily said.

To prepare for the sovereign’s safe visit “an informed source alerted security services in Laâyoune on the arrival of representatives of the Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (S&T Branch), general information and a commission of the Ministry of Interior,” the newspaper said.

According to the same source, King Mohammed VI’s visit was finally confirmed, “after Laâyoune Police headquarters brought together all of its services in light of the [King’s] visit to secure the Green March festivities”.

The Moroccan King will also be touching on key points concerning the Sahara, “It is expected that important decisions will be announced from Laâyoune, in addition to others related to the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs (CORCAS, ed.) chaired by Khallihenna Ould Errachid,” the daily revealed.

Among the significant subjects the King will allegedly discuss are: the “implementation of advanced regionalization”, the “inauguration of major projects”, a “seawater desalination station”, a “bus station, the largest of its kind in all of Africa”, “social housing projects”, and a “cancer center” funded by the Lalla Salma Foundation.

According to the daily, the 40th Green March celebrations in Laâyoune will also include a legends football match and a film to remember the November 6, 1975 march.
