Taroudante – Qatar plans to hire more than 50,000 Moroccan workers in all sectors, according to diplomatic sources based in Rabat cited by the London-based Arabic-language newspaper Al Quds Al Arabi.
According to the same diplomatic sources, recruiting 50,000 Moroccan workers will be among the priorities of the agenda of the two-day working visit of the Moroccan Prime Minister, Abdelilah Benkirane, to Doha on April 5-6. Benkirane will co-chair a meeting of the Higher Committee for Economic Bilateral Cooperation along with the Qatari Minister of Interior, Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa.
The same source added that Benkirane will lead a delegation of government ministers and influential Moroccan employers to discuss bilateral cooperation.
At the Doha meeting, participants are expected to discuss the challenges that hinder the development of economic exchange and other economic cooperation between Morocco and Qatar, which did not exceed $200 million in 2015.
The Qatari newspaper al-Watan, reported that King Mohammed VI, currently on a private visit to the Netherlands, had a telephone conversation on Monday, March 29, with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Than, the Emir of Qatar.
The same source said that the monarchs discussed ways of enhancing bilateral relations between Morocco and Qatar, as well as a number of issues of common concern.
Last December the Qatari Minister of Higher Education, Mohamed ben Abdelwahed al-Hammadi, and the Moroccan Ambassador to Qatar, El Mekki Gaouane, signed a protocol of cooperation in Doha, allowing Qatar to recruit Moroccan professors beginning in the academic year 2016/2017.
According to the most recent figures published by the Ministry in Moroccan Expatriates and Migration Affairs, 75,000 Moroccans currently live in Qatar.
