Rabat- Driss Lachgar, the First Secretary of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP) party yesterday convened with youth party delegates to discuss their recent vote in favor of allowing Polisario students to join the International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY) during IUSY conference in Tirana, Albania.
After Lachgar canceled a press conference to explain the reasons behind the USFP youth wing’s vote, he announced a meeting with youth party delegates to clarify the stance of USFP regarding the Sahara issue.
According to news outlet Alyaoum24, the press conference was cancelled by Lachgar in order to avoid facing embarrassing questions from journalists.
The meeting comes after the USFP youth party delegates’ vote for the separatists resulted in an uproar among USFP party members and Moroccan social media users, who described the vote as disrespectful to Morocco.
The same source added that four USFP members resigned, claiming they did so due to the tendency of Abdellah Sibari, General Secretary of USFP’s youth wing, to make unilateral decisions on behalf of the party’s youth.
