Rabat – Monday will be the first day of new Islamic or Hegira year in Morocco, Moroccan authorities said on Saturday.
The 1st day of the month Muharram of the new year Islamic year or Hegira years 1438 corresponds to Monday 03 October, announced, on Saturday, the Morccan Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs in a statement.
The Ministry states that it contacted on Saturday evening delegates of the ministry, and the units of the Royal Armed Forces, who confirmed the non-observation of the crescent of the month of Muharram.
Therefore, the month Dou El Hijja will complete 30 days and 1 Muharram of the new year of Hegira 1438 correspond to Monday, October 3, 2016, the same source said.
Unlike the Gregorian year, the Islamic year is based on the lunar calendar. As a result, each month begins with the new moon. Though the Hegira has twelve months, it falls short of the Gregorian calendar by 11 days.
It was named after the “Hegira” which marks the Prophet Mohammed’s journey or emigration from Mecca where he was persecuted to Medina. The Prophet’s emigration to Medina is referred to as Hegira.
