Morocco Gains 5 Points in 2018 Global Entrepreneurship Index, Ranking 70th Worldwide

Rabat – Morocco enjoyed a five points jump in the “Global entrepreneurship index 2018 – GEDI” ranking, moving from the 70th position in 2017 to the 65th position in 2018, out of 137 countries.

Morocco ranked under Kazakhstan (64th) and Belize (63rd), and topped Egypt (76th) and Algeria (80th). Tunisia gained two places compared to 2017, ranking 40th out of 137 countries surveyed.

“The promise of jobs and economic growth and the optimism and hope that entrepreneurs bring to government efforts to create opportunity and prosperity for their citizens has generated an extraordinary increase in attention from all levels of government in empowering their entrepreneurial ecosystems,” said Jonathan Ortmans, president of the Global Entrepreneurship Network.

In the MENA region, Morocco gained one spot compared to 2017, moving to the 10th position. Israel topped the ranking and was placed 16th in the world, followed by Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman.

“In countries around the world we’re seeing improvements in entrepreneurship ecosystems, most notably in their ability to create innovative products,” Zoltan Acs, co-author of the report told Digital Journal.

“This is encouraging news, as the conditions that support entrepreneurs tend to have a positive impact across economies.”

The United States topped the ranking, followed by Switzerland, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, and Denmark.

“The Global Entrepreneurship Index provides a tool, an evidence-based roadmap, for ecosystem builders and decision makers to strengthen their entrepreneurial communities,” added Ortmans

The authors estimate that the three percent improvement of scores globally over the last year could lead to an addition of USD 7 trillion to the global economy.
