Rabat – Like every year, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau again wished a blessed Ramadan to all the Muslims across the world. The holy month of Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. All months in the Islamic calendar last from 29 to 30 days.

The prime minister started his message with a Muslim salutation: “Assalamualaikum, or peace be upon you.”

In his message, the Canadian leader said, “Muslims and friends will gather to pray together and fast during the day time and break their fast in the evening at ‘iftars’ around the globe.”

In the message, the official also said that Ramadan honors the “values at the heart of Islam like compassion and service to others.”

Prime Minister Trudeau acknowledged the increase of Islamophobia, emphasizing that “for many Muslims, these last few months have been difficult ones.”

“Communities have suffered hateful, Islamophobic acts of violence‒acts that have no place anywhere in our world.”

He also expressed his commitment to stand up against hate: “We will always call out Islamophobia,” said Trudeau.

Prime Minister Trudeau also lauded the efforts of Muslims in Canada and their contribution to building a “better Canada.”

“Today, let’s celebrate their contributions and come together to continue that work,” he said as he wished a blessed and peaceful Ramadan on the behalf of his family.

As the US and other countries in the world, the first day of Ramadan in Canada started today, May 6.

Data from 2011 show 3.2% of Canadians to be Muslim, while 67% of Canadians are Christian, and 24% had no religion. Other religious groups in Canada also include Jewish people, who represent 1%, and Buddhists who are at 1.1 %, and Hindu, 1.5 %.

While Canada and other countries began Ramadan today, others like Morocco celebrate the first day of Ramadan on May 7, 2019.
