Rabat – King Mohammed VI has instructed all authorities involved in the field of transportation to facilitate the Moroccan diaspora’s summer holiday in Morocco.

The King also called on transportation companies to offer air, sea, and land trips at “affordable prices,” a statement from the royal cabinet said on Sunday.

The statement noted that the King ordered all stakeholders in the field of air transportation, in particular Royal Air Maroc, as well as various stakeholders in maritime transportation, “to ensure reasonable prices that are within everyone’s reach.”

The King also called for ensuring a “sufficient” number of rotations to allow Moroccan families abroad to return to the country and “reconnect with their families and relatives, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

In this context, King Mohammed VI urged tourism operators to make the necessary arrangements to welcome members of the Moroccan community residing abroad in the best conditions and at the best prices.

The royal statement comes a few days before the entry into effect of the Moroccan government’s recent decision to allow international flights.

Last week, Morocco announced that international air travel to and from the country will resume on June 15.

In its statement announcing the news, Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Ministry indicated that the decision takes into account the evolution of the national and international epidemiological situation “ and preservation of the gains made by our country to curb the spread of the coronavirus.”

The statement also emphasized that the measure aims to facilitate the return of Moroccans residing abroad.

Meanwhile, the countries with which Morocco will resume flights are classified into two lists, in line with the recommendations of the Ministry of Health and on the basis of official epidemiological data by the World Health Organization (WHO).

These recent statements are positive news for Moroccans residing abroad, the majority of whom were not able to visit Morocco last year due to COVID-19.

The number of Moroccans residing abroad is estimated at over five million. As part of the national push to facilitate their return to Morocco,  King Mohammed VI has repeatedly instructed the government to continue to improve services intended for the diaspora.

Recent statistics indicate that Moroccan expatriates have significantly contributed to maintaining Morocco’s overall positive economic outlook amid the COVID-19 crisis. Moroccans residing abroad sent almost MAD 29 billion ($2.26 billion)  in remittances, between January and April this year.
