Rabat – Morocco’s Ministry of Health announced 8,995 new confirmed COVID-19 cases in Morocco on July 29, 2021. In addition, the ministry noted 2,101 recoveries and 32 deaths.
Morocco recorded a record breaking 9,428 new cases on July 28, which has prompted many to question the Moroccan government’s response to the newest wave of COVID-19.
As the peak tourism season rages on and Morocco continues to accept Moroccans Residing Abroad (MREs), the daily number of confirmed cases is likely to continue to rise. Morocco has recorded nearly 40,000 new cases since July 22. The national celebration of Eid al-Adha on July 21 may be a contributing factor in the daily count as many Moroccan family members gathered for the annual holiday.
In the official COVID-19 report, the ministry noted that Morocco has recorded a total of 606,871 COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic in early 2020. The kingdom has also recorded a cumulative 9,697 deaths and 552,983 recoveries.
Of the cases recorded, 855 were severe, 29 required emergency ventilation, and 460 required supplementary oxygen. Moroccan hospitals are currently at 27% capacity, which is an increase of 1.6% from the previous day’s report.
Casablanca and the surrounding region maintains the record for most new cases in 24 hours with 2,937 cases and 10 deaths in 24 hours. Following Casablanca, the Marrakech-Safi region has recorded 1,404 new cases and 4 deaths.
Other regions such as Agadir’s Souss-Massa, Rabat-Sale-Kenitra, and Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima have recorded more than at least 600 new cases while smaller municipalities such as Draa-Tafilalet, Beni Mellal-Khenifra, Oujda, Guelmim, Fes-Meknes, and Morocco’s most southern territories have recorded between 100 and 450 cases each.
Since Morocco extended its vaccination campaign to the 25-29 age group, the kingdom has increased daily vaccinations drastically. In just 24 hours, Morocco managed to vaccinate nearly half a million people. The increase comes as the kingdom receives new shipments of vaccines from allies such as the US and China.
Morocco passed the 10 million mark for fully-vaccinated Moroccans and residents on July 28. There are 10,094,160 fully-vaccinated and 13,388,726 recipients of at least one dose.
Currently, authorities have administered 6,908,493 tests, 43,925 of which were in the last 24 hours.
The kingdom’s COVID-19 mortality rate is holding at 1.6%, although the recovery rate has decreased from 92% to 91.1%.
Moroccan authorities are continuing to ask citizens to adhere to the preventative health measures such as the wearing of masks and maintaining a safe distance from others while in public spaces. Many Moroccans are rallying together to stop the spread of the virus, and the government has even launched a new campaign on state news outlets and television.
A message in Arabic reads “COVID-19 is still a danger” on many of the kingdom’s official websites and news sites.
Although there have been no new updates regarding border closures and travel restrictions for List A and B countries, travelers are advised to check the Ministry of Tourism’s website frequently.
There are currently 44,191 active cases of the COVID-19 virus in Morocco and those within the kingdom’s borders are advised to follow the official safety measures and respect the barriers put in place to protect the public from the next wave of the virus.
