Denver- The Ministry of Justice has announced that King Mohammed VI has decided to pardon 371 convicted individuals throughout Morocco.
The pardons are in celebration of Revolution day, a national holiday that will take place this Friday, August 20th. Of the 371 individuals pardoned, 263 are inmates currently detained in prisons across the country.
Four of the inmates will have life sentences commuted to lesser prison sentences. Twelve will receive grace reducing their sentences to less time, and 247 will receive remission and effectively be freed from imprisonment after the pardon.
The pardons will also apply to 108 people who are not currently detained. Out of these, 38 will receive lower prison sentences than the length they were originally sentenced to. Nine individuals will have their prison sentences removed, and will just be required to pay relevant fines. A further 60 individuals will have fines eliminated, and one individual will have both fines and prison time removed.
King Mohammed VI has traditionally pardoned individuals during important celebrations for important national and religious holidays. During Throne Day celebrations in late July, the King announced pardons for 1,243 people across the country.
Similarly, pardons were also announced ahead of Eid al-Adha celebrations during the same month. During the Eid pardons, the king has shown mercy to 761, with both sentences and fines being reduced or eliminated.
