Rabat – Morocco’s Ministry of Health urged all citizens and residents who had already taken the first dose of the Astrazeneca vaccine to take the second shot before August 28.
“It is possible a vaccine shortage will occur by that date,” the ministry argued.
The ministry reminded citizens to respect the 28-day interval between the two doses.
Morocco has ordered millions of vaccines from several laboratories to guarantee a sufficient supply of vaccines for the population.
Morocco seeks to vaccinate over 33 million, or 80%, of its population to achieve herd immunity against the virus, particularly after the emergence of newer, deadlier strains.
In addition to AstraZeneca, Morocco also currently uses the Sinopharm and Janssen vaccines.
According to reports, Morocco has also ordered Pfizer vaccines and plans to extend the vaccination campaign to target the younger population before the academic year starts.
The vaccination campaign has been extended to the 18-year old age group. As of August 16, the 15-18 year old age group is also eligible for the vaccination campaign.
Morocco’s vaccination campaign is progressing, and a growing number of people are fully vaccinated.
Morocco’s Ministry of Health is urging citizens to engage in the campaign amid a surge of cases.
Morocco has recently been reporting over 9,000 COVID-19 cases per day and over 100 deaths.
Active cases reached 79,118 to date.
Total death toll due to the pandemic stood at 1,119 , while recoveries reached 673,136.
