Rabat – The winners of Morocco’s latest general elections are expected to launch consultations for the formation of a new government, starting Monday.
Rachid Talbi Alami, a member of the National Rally of Independents Party (RNI) announced the news during remarks to the press in Rabat on Saturday.
“These consultations will concern all the parties that obtained seats in parliament for the formation of a coalition in order to constitute the next government team,” Alami said.
RNI, which earlier this week won an overwhelming victory in Morocco’s 2021 general elections, secured the majority of seats in the country’s House of Representatives.
Following the final result of the September 8 general elections, the RNI won 102 seats; it was followed by the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) with 87 seats, while the Istiqlal Party (PI) secured 81 seats.
The Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP) won 35 seats, followed by the Popular Movement (MP) with 29, the Party for Progress and Socialism (PPS) with 21, and the Constitutional Union (UC) with 18).
The Justice and Development Party (PJD), which has been Morocco’s ruling party for the past ten years, suffered an embarrassing loss and only managed to win 13 parliamentary seats – a freefall from the 125 seats the conservative party won in the previous elections in 2016.
Alami, who served previously as minister of sports, said that the negotiations to form a new government “must be focused as a whole on the program of the party and those of the other parties which share the same visions and ideas.”
As Morocco’s new ruling party, RNI expressed its determination to work with all political forces both locally and across the country to form a “strong and harmonious coalition.”
On Friday, King Mohammed appointed RNI leader Aziz Akhannouch as the new head of government, instructing him to form his government in accordance with constitutional provisions..
In a letter to the King following his party’s victory and his appointment as Prime Minister, Akhannounch said that his party will engage in consultations with the parties in agreement with him to “implement his majesty’s vision” and form a “coherent and homogeneous majority that will be tasked to carry out convergent programs.”
