Palestinians Riot in West Bank in Support of Escaped Prisoners

Six Palestinian prisoners escaped from the Gilboa Prison in North Israel with the aid of an underground tunnel, which set off a chain of events.

In the wake of the Gilboa prison breakout, thousands of Palestinians clashed with Israeli troops in the West Bank on Wednesday, September 8, firing at the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in Ramallah, following the Palestinian prisoners’ riot across Israeli prisons.

Thousands of Palestinians marched the streets of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and Jerusalem to express solidarity and support for prisoners facing Israel’s reprisals after six detainees escaped from the high-security Gilboa Prison.

The Israeli armed forces have been cracking down on Palestinian prisoners inside prisons after six Palestinian inmates escaped from the Gilboa Prison in the north of the country. Prisoners have been taken from their cells, and their families are being denied visits.

Palestinians that are protesting in Gaza held placards that said: “All of us support the prisoners… We will protect the prisoners… We will liberate the freedom fighters.”

Several tents and cells were burned in response to the Israeli crackdown campaign.

Iyad Abu Fannouneh, a Hamas leader who was formerly imprisoned, made the following remarks at a Hamas gathering, “Our people and our resistance will not leave the prisoners alone facing the oppression and arrogance of their jailers.”

Daud Shehab, a senior leader of the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine, also said, “The Palestinian people are united behind the prisoners. Their issue enjoys a national consensus.”

A large number of Palestinians took part in gatherings to show their support and solidarity for the prisoners in Ramallah and Nablus in the West Bank. The protesters held banners and placards that said, “We will protect the prisoners with our souls.. Prisoners are our heroes.. Prisoners are not criminals, they are freedom fighters.”
