Rabat – King Mohammed VI today granted his royal pardon to 510 people sentenced across Morocco, a statement from the Ministry of Justice said
The statement comes on the eve of al Mawlid Nabawi commemoration. The event celebrates te birth of Prophet Muhammad.
The royal pardon is broken into two categories, with the first category including 345 inmates.
Seven detainees of the first category will be exempted from the remainder of their prison sentence.
About 336 benefited from the reduction of their prison sentences.
Two inmates benefited from changing their prison sentence from life imprisonment to a specified duration of imprisonment.
The beneficiaries also include 165 people who have been released on bail.
Of the 165, 53 people benefited from the exemption from imprisonment for the remainder of their prison sentences.
About 12 people have been exempted from their prison sentences but will still pay the fines given by the courts during their conviction.
Under the royal pardon, about 93 people will now be exempted from paying their fines.
Seven people benefited from exemption from the remainder of both their prison sentences and fines.
The royal pardon is a custom in Morocco on religious and national events.
