Rabat – Morocco’s Institute for Research in Solar Energy (IRESEN), fertilizer giant OCP Group and Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) signed today a cooperation agreement to implement the “Green H2A ” technological platform.

The three institutions signed the agreement at UM6P’s main campus in Benguerir, and the joint platform is dedicated to research and development as well as innovation in the Green Hydrogen sector and its applications (Power-to-X).

As the first hub of its kind at the African level, the platform seeks to play a major role in the industrial deployment of the green hydrogen sector and its applications in Morocco.

Among other goals, the platform will make it possible to investigate, test, demonstrate, and adapt to the local context as well as boost innovative technologies in “this promising sector,” said a joint statement from the three partners.

“Alongside the National Commission for Green Hydrogen, and the ‘Green H2 Morocco’ Cluster, GreenH2A is a structuring link in the Green Hydrogen ecosystem in our country, and strengthening its value chain,” the statement added.

OCP expressed satisfaction with the cooperation agreement, emphasizing that the project is a “real opportunity.”

Abdelaziz El Mallah, OCP Group’s Industrial Executive Director,t emphasized that the project represents a “real opportunity for our country and a potentially promising market for our industrial group.”

“The production of green hydrogen is an added value to the production of electricity from renewable sources, in particular its transformation into products with higher energy density and high economic potential, which will meet a significant global demand for green molecules allowing us to move closer to carbon neutrality,” he added.

As well as developing Morocco’s power-to-x sector, the platform is also projected to allow technological and decision-making support for public policies and national and international industry, especially on normative and certification aspects.

The Green H2A is also expected to enable production of knowledge and expertise for the public and private sectors and create a state-of-the-art training offer for capacity building and the development of human capital for universities and research centers.

IRESEN expressed satisfaction with the project, with Badr Ikken, the General Director of the institution, saying that “hydrogen is a key link in the energy transition.”

Hicham El Habti, President of the UM6P also welcomed the agreement, noting that the university is pleased with the establishment of the infrastructure that will be a “real tool” for creating value and knowledge.

Habti echoed El Mallajh’s sentiment that the project is a “great opportunity for Morocco, which was recognized among the six countries with the highest potential at the global level in 2018.”

He said the production of green hydrogen in Morocco will promote economic growth, contribute to the decarbonization of the country’s industry, and allow for co-finance transition and energy security.
