Rabat – The US magazine “US News & World Report” has declared Mohammed I University (UMP) in Oujda as Morocco’s best institute for higher education in its global ranking of universities for 2022.

The ranking evaluated more than 1,750 universities and institutes of higher education worldwide, including 66 in Africa.

In the global ranking, UMP ranked 630th, followed by Hassan II University in Casablanca (779th), Mohammed V University in Rabat (940th), and Cadi Ayyad University in Marrakech (963th).

The UMP was ranked 14th in Africa out of 40 universities for 2022, according to the US magazine, followed by Hassan II University (18th).

Mohammed V University and Cadi Ayyad University are ranked 31st and 34th respectively.

The evaluation took several criteria into consideration, including the performance of scientific research and international and regional renown, the source said.

The UMP had occupied the first place at the African level in the “engineering” category in 2021, and ranked 335th place worldwide out of 650 universities in the Scimago institutions Ranking in October.

For the same year, the UMP ranked first nationally in physics, according to the Shanghai Ranking.

In October, Morocco’s new government stressed its ambitions to implement several measures to improve the quality of the education system in the country.

According to reports, the country intends to strengthen human resources with a focus on investing in boosting teachers’ skills and establishing training centers. The government’s action plan also included putting early childhood development as a priority with a goal of achieving 100% enrollment rate in preschool by 2028.

As for research and innovation projects, Morocco is stepping up efforts to promote scientific research and upgrade digitalization in education.
