Yair Lapid, Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister said on December 22 it is imperative that Morocco and Israel continue building and strengthening their bilateral ties.

The Israeli official made his remarks in a speech during the first anniversary of the tripartite Joint Declaration between Israel, Morocco, and the US.

The event took place virtually as preventive measures to respect social distancing amid the COVID-19 crisis. Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita participated in the event along with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Lapid said Morocco and Israel must continue to build and find new initiatives to strengthen bilateral ties.

“We are celebrating a year of renewed peace between old friends. The ties between our peoples are deep and the relations between our countries are more solid than ever,” Lapid added.

The Israeli official stressed that the two countries are establishing closer relations on a wide range of issues.

Lapid also recalled his visit to Morocco in August, saying it was one of the “highlights” of his position as a minister.

On December 22, 2020, Rabat hosted Israel, Morocco, and the US to sign the Joint Declaration, establishing the countries commitment to boost bilateral ties and cooperation in all fields.

Morocco announced the establishment of relations between the two countries on December 10. The day also marked the US decision to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.

Bourita and Blinken have expressed committed determination to see their countries cooperate and strengthen bilateral relations as part of the joint declaration.

“On behalf of the United States, I am delighted to offer my congratulations to the governments and peoples of Morocco and Israel on the one-year anniversary of the normalization of relations,” Blinken said.

He explained that the declaration has deepened US-Morocco-Israel ties as the three countries hope to see the agreement achieving more cooperation between them in all fields.

Bourita also conveyed Morocco’s satisfaction with the outcomes of the declaration, saying that it boosts partnership, peace, and a union between the peoples of the three countries.
