Fez – Cigarettes prices in Morocco are expected to increase starting January 1, 2022, according to Moroccan media outlet Le360. A one-to-two Moroccan dirham increase is likely to affect the most-consumed cigarette brands in Morocco.

The Commission for the Approval of Prices of Manufactured Tobacco Products, affiliated with the Finance Ministry, met on December 14-15 to set new price ceilings for cigarettes.

The media outlet further stated that this increase is likely to affect locally manufactured brands, keeping international brands at their current prices.

The price increase will concern the so-called “popular” brands and generally those currently sold at less than 26 Moroccan dirhams per pack.

Cigarettes prices may witness further modification six months into the new year following a scheduled meeting of the tobacco products licensing board, added the media outlet.

Morocco issued an increase in the prices of cigarettes earlier this year. The increase affected some of the country’s most consumed brands namely Camel, Marlboro, and Winston.

The upcoming increase will be between one and two Moroccan dirhams for most brands.

More recently, the newly-elected government announced intentions to revise the country’s tobacco taxation framework. This new ratification is expected to impose more increases on cigarettes prices, especially “e-cigarettes”.

The progressive taxation rate will steadily increase consumer tobacco taxes between 2022 and 2026.
