Rabat – Air Arabia Maroc will join a group of carriers to resume international flights to and from Morocco, starting February 7.
The carrier announced the news on its Twitter page, calling on its customers to visit Air Arabia’s website for more details.
Air Arabia‘s announcement follows Morocco’s decision to reopen its airspace to flights after more than two months of a travel ban to curb the spread of Omicron.
The decision to lift the travel ban comes after recommendations from the government’s COVID-19 Scientific Committee.
Morocco’s borders have been closed since November 29, as part of the country’s approach to counter emerging COVID-19 strains, especially the extremely contagious Omicron variant.
Morocco’s government is yet to release a new, detailed statement on conditions and requirements travelers should follow once the borders open on February 7.
Like Air Arabia, several other carriers have announced the resumption of their flights to and from Morocco.
Binter announced its decision to resume flights connecting Morocco and Spain. Transavia, Air France, and Morocco’s carrier Royal Air Maroc have also made similar announcements in the immediate aftermath of the government’s decision to open borders on February 7.
The opening of the borders has been a priority demand from air carriers and tourism professionals, who suffered colossal losses due to the closure.
Tourism professionals have been protesting the border closure for months as they suffered job losses.
Travel agencies have also been impacted due to lack of demands in the market.
With reports that tourists have already been visiting other countries that have not closed their borders in recent months, it remains to be seen whether the reopening of borders will revive Morocco’s tourism sector.
