Rabat – Morocco is promoting tourism in the Western Sahara region with the presentation of a  book focusing on the region’s tourism potential at the Madrid International Tourism Fair. Spanish photographer and graphic designer Gonzalo Sanchez Alvarez-Castellanos presented on January 28 his book at the Moroccan Pavilion at the tourism fair.

Titled “Cultural Tourism in the South of Morocco,” Alvarez-Castellanos’s book unveils the tourist potential of the three regions in southern Morocco, shedding light on the development projects implemented in the regions to improve its infrastructure.

The 219-page book reviews the hidden gems and historical places in Western Sahara, while emphasizing the region’s attractiveness that made it a destination of choice for foreign tourists due to its rich and diverse culture that encompasses the Moroccan identity as well.

With a vision of promoting the Moroccanness of the Sahara in his country, the Spanish photographer stressed in a statement to Morocco’s state agency MAP that the southern regions “have an incomparable and diversified tourism potential likely to attract visitors of all kinds.”

He also affirmed that tourism is an effective way to unveil facts about Morocco’s southern provinces and correct the lingering false narratives regarding the region.

“The historical and archeological sites of the three regions of the southern provinces testify to the Moroccanness of the Sahara and are an important treasure that must be showcased,” he added.

The book additionally features the different projects Morocco has implemented to encourage foreign investment in the region. The massive infrastructure programs have immensely improved the investment climate in the southern regions.

Morocco has been accelerating its efforts in its southern provinces as part of the country’s vision to make the region a central pillar of its aspirations to be a regional leader in terms of investments and development projects.
