Rabat – France’s President Emmanuel Macron has sparked outrage with his recent controversial remarks on unvaccinated people.
In an interview with Le Parisien, Macron used a slang term, saying he wants to “piss off” unvaccinated people.
“I’m not for pissing off the French … now the unvaccinated, I really want to piss them off. And so, we’re going to keep doing it, until the end. This is the strategy.”
The statement comes amid preparations for the first round of the 2022 French presidential elections expected to take place in April.
Macrons’ undiplomatic tone while speaking about the unvaccinated did not sit well with a number of people both in France and elsewhere in the world. Lashing out at the French president’s comments, many French and non-French internet users condemned what they saw as a disrespectful and discriminatory message.
“What disturbs me most about this is not what Macron said – that’s to be expected of him and his demented demonization and discrimination of anyone who chooses not to obey the jab order but the number of people who agree with him and think what he’s doing is justified,” said English columnist and radio broadcaster Carol McGiffin.
British YouTuber Paul Joseph Watson agreed. Macron’s comments are “completely beyond the pale. Really vile stuff. In a just world, his election hopes would now be toast,” Watson said.
Political talk show host Kim Iversen made a sarcastic comment, saying that she guesses Macron “no longer wants to be president.”
Another Twitter user called on people in France to stand firm against Macron’s remarks.
“Realise [sic] that your freedoms and liberties are openly under attack right now. Fight back and do what’s needed.”
As it seeks to tighten restrictions against people refusing to take the COVID vaccine, the French government is considering a draft bill that aims to replace France’s health pass with a mandatory vaccine pass.
If enacted, the legislation will make it compulsory for people over 12 years of age to obtain a valid vaccination certificate to be able to access public spaces, such as restaurants, bars, and other establishments.
