Rabat – French-Congolese rapper and singer Maitre Gims has infuriated many of his fans after he released a video calling on them to stop sending him new year and birthday wishes.
In a video Gims posted on his social media, the iconic singer said birthday and new year wishes are not part of Muslims’ beliefs.
“I never responded to this, but you keep sending me through January and February. Muslims stop it,” he said in reaction to wishes he had received from fans.
Addressing his Muslim fans, he said: “Brothers, we don’t celebrate that. It’s not part of our belief.”
“Did the [Prophet’s companions] celebrate the New Year? No!,” Maitre Gims added.
The singer also indicated that he does not like it when he receives wishes during his birthday.
“It’s one more step towards death,” he argued.
The rapper called on his fans to focus on their values and spiritual growth.
Maitre Gims’ remarks did not go unnoticed, with many slamming him for the apparent hypocrisy and headline-seeking posturing of such a message coming from a pop singer.
“Maitre Gims does not accept it when someone reminds him that music is not in line with Islamic values,” one commenter on Twitter said sarcastically.
Another, more quick-witted Twitter commenter, added, “Maitre Gims rant at people who wish him happy new year, bcause it is halam [sic] in Islam. So [what about] Chanel Caps and NRJ music awards. Are fur coats and half naked girls good or halam [sic] too?”
