Morocco Invests Cultural Heritage Preservation in Figuig

Rabat – Morocco’s Youth, Culture, and Communication Minister, Mohammed Mehdi Bensaid, launched yesterday a project to preserve the natural and cultural heritage of castles situated in Figuig, an oasis town in Eastern Morocco near the Atlas Mountains range.

The project will invest in squares, historical sites, and the principal entrance to the region’s water distribution facility, according to a press release.

Set to be carried out within a six-month time frame, the project also comprises plans to build two towers conforming to local architecture with a budget of MAD 700,000 ($74,737).

Accompanied by the governor (Wali) of Morocco’s Eastern region and president of the region’s council, Bensaid visited yesterday the site of construction for the 3.6-kilometer touristic road.

In line with Morocco’s plan to stimulate tourism in the region, the government invested MAD7.7 million ($822,108) in the construction of the road.

During the visit, Bensaid equally inaugurated the project of the construction of a multi-purpose haul. The project extends to Figuig’s Hassania Engineering school.

In recent months, Morocco’s government has taken special attention to preserving the country’s cultural and historical heritage in an attempt to stimulate tourism and create economic opportunities for local residents.

In January, Bensaid paid a visit to the renovation work underway in one of Morocco’s most ancient cities, Essaouira. In early January, the minister also visited renovation work taking place in Rabat’s twin-city, Sale.

Morocco is banking on its historical and cultural repository to stimulate tourism and bring the sector back on track after the COVID-induced stagnation that left many businesses struggling to remain open long after the national lockdown came to an end.
