Morocco’s head of government, Aziz Akhannouch, will visit Doha on February 6 as part of a ministerial delegation, according to press sources.

Akhannouch will lead the delegation to participate in the 8th session of the Morocco-Qatar High Joint Cooperation Commission, taking place in the Qatari capital.

In addition to Akhannouch, the delegation will include Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Minister of Economy and Finance Nadia Fettah Alaoui, and Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development Leila Benali.

The Minister of Economic Integration, Small Business, Employment and Skills, Younes Sekkouri, and Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication, Mehdi Bensaid are also part of the delegation.

More ministers may join the trip as preparations for the event are currently being finalized.

The meetings between the two counties’ representatives will focus on improving economic ties between the two countries and maintaining the “excellent” bilateral relations between the two governments.

Commercial exchanges between the two countries reached MAD 731 million ($78 million) in 2017, with the balance being favorable to Morocco by about MAD 182 million ($19.4 million), according to the latest official data from Qatar.

The two governments want to “form a basis for the strengthening of bilateral cooperation in all areas,” according to government sources. The countries are also discussing opening a maritime commercial line to further improve economic relations.

The two countries have enjoyed good and stable relations. Qatar recently reiterated its support for Morocco on the issue of Western Sahara, and the two countries have been increasing their economic cooperation.

Late last year, Morocco renewed the license for Qatar Petroleum to continue its exploration for oil in its southern waters.
