Rabat – A Spanish delegation, currently visiting the southern provinces of Morocco, explored archaeological sites in Tarfaya  province in the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region.

The delegation is visiting the southern region at the initiative of the Sakia El Hamra Center for Studies and Research and the Murcia “Talh” Association, with an aim of learning more about economic, natural, and cultural development in the south of Morocco.

The visit is expected to result in the signature of a partnership agreement between the “Interaction” Association in Murcia, and the Sakia El Hamra Center for Studies and Research in Laayoune as well as the “Miran” Association for the Protection of Heritage in Es-Smara.

The agreement aims to protect the heritage in Tarfaya while also identifying and researching archaeological and natural sites in the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region.

The delegation is further expected to visit the bird areas in the Naila reserve in the southern province.

Morocco’s Naila reserve in the Laayoune-Boujdour-Sakia El Hamra region is located near the rural commune of Akhnir and is a wetland known for its biodiversity, stretching for 20 kilometers and covering an area of 6,500 hectares.

The Naila reserve is an essential and important part of the Khnifiss National Park, which encompasses a natural area of 180,000 hectares. More than 211 bird species can be found in the reserve.

The delegation is composed of historian and professor at the University of Murcia, Antonio Vicente Fray Sánchez, photographer and graphic designer Gonzalo Sánchez Álvarez Castellanos, and Murcia Radio journalist Paulino Ross.

Morocco’s Consul General in the Spanish town of  Murcia, Mohamed Biadillah, is leading the delegation.

Professor Gonzalo Sanchez Alvarez Castellanos is set to give a lecture at the multidisciplinary University of Es-Smara, during which he will present his work entitled “Rock engravings in southern Morocco,” which was published in Spain last February.
