Rabat – European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi lauded on March 10 in Rabat, Morocco’s “serious and credible” efforts in finding a solution to the regional conflict over Western Sahara.
“We consider the serious and credible efforts led by Morocco on the Western Sahara conflict as positive, as it is reflected in UN Security Council Resolution 2468 of 2019,” said Varhelyi in a press briefing alongside Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita.
The European official also reiterated the European Commission’s support for the efforts of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the Sahara issue.
“I welcome the ambitious reform program led by King Mohammed VI, whose objectives converge with the economic, and investment plan for the southern neighborhood,” Varhelyi noted.
Varhelyi, who held diplomatic talks with Bourita in Rabat, stressed that the European Commission reaffirms the need to continue the political process to achieve a “realistic, pragmatic political solution, sustainable and mutually acceptable” to the Western Sahara conflict.
“We encourage all parties to continue their commitment to the search for a peaceful solution, in a spirit of realism and compromise,” said the European official.
Oliver Varhelyi, who visited Morocco on March 9 and 10, signed a new agreement with Nasser Bourita. The agreement seeks to boost cooperation related to the Link Up Africa project, a first of its kind project within the framework of the Partnership between the Kingdom and the European Union.
“Link Up Africa” project focuses on strengthening employment, the socio-economic integration of youth, and intra-African mobility to contribute to the development of the African continent.
Through the new agreement, which includes two projects with a budget of € 4.15 million, Morocco and the EU aim to boost academic and technical ties with other African countries.
