Rabat – The Ministry of Agriculture said the agricultural and fisheries sectors performed well during the 2021-2022 season, despite several challenges due to global and regional issues.
In a statement following a meeting of the Morocco Foods Administrative Council, the ministry said that the value of agricultural and fisheries food products exported reached a total of MAD 68.4 billion ($6.84 billion) in 2021.
The number represents a growth of 9% compared to 2020.
In the 2021-2022 season, covering the period from September 2021 to the end of February 2021, vegetable exports recorded a volume of about 773,000 tonnes. The number represents a growth of 18% compared to the same period in the 2020-2021 season.
Citrus exports achieved a growth of about 37% at the end of February. The exports volume moved from 412,000 tonnes during the 2020-2021 season to 566,000 tonnes during the 2021-2022 season.
Despite the 4% decrease in the volume of fish products in 2021, the value of exports recorded a growth of 15%, the statement said.
In 2022, exports of marine products recorded a growth of about 17% in volume and 44% in value by the end of February 2022 compared to the same period last year.
The volume of exports of manufactured agricultural products, excluding sugar, reached 525,000 tonnes in 2021. This volume represents a growth of 14% compared to 2020.
In terms of value, exports in the manufactured agricultural products amounted to MAD 11.9 billion ($1.19 billion) in 2021 compared to about MAD 9.9 billion ($.99 billion) in 2020. This represents an increase of 20%.
The ministry added that the upward trend continued during the beginning of 2022, with the growth rate reaching 11% in terms of volume and 43% in terms of value at the end of 2022 compared to the same period a year earlier.
