Rabat – The National Coordination of Contractual Teachers in Morocco (CNPCC) has announced its decision to extend its national strike for another week.
Hundreds of contractual teachers from across Morocco participated in a national protest that started on February 28 and included a three-day march in Rabat from March 3 to 6.
However, the peaceful demonstrations descended into violence, leading the CNPCC to extend the national strike for another week.
The teacher’s coordination explained in a statement that the peaceful three-day march contractual teachers held last week was met with“ repression.”
The same source criticized the government’s security approach against peaceful demonstrators.
During the three-day march on March 2, 3, and 4, contractual teachers organized a massive protest outside of the Ministry of Education headquarters. Demonstrators called for employment integration into the public sector without some current restrictions or conditions.
The press committee of the coordination stated that security services arrested 100 teachers.
The coordination called these acts an “attack targeting teachers” and insisted the acts demonstrate “the government’s determination to humiliate and degrade teachers.”
The coordination will organize protests, on Thursday, March 10, in front of the courts of first instance to denounce the arrest of teachers.
Moroccans continue to show solidarity with contractual teachers through the use of the hashtag #protect_teachers_in_Morocco.
