Tunisia – May 2 will mark the official date of Eid Al-Fitr in Tunisia, according to the Tunisia Ministry for Religious Affairs.
The ministry said the crescent moon of Shawaal was not visible tonight.
Eid Al-Fitr coincides with the first day of the Shawal, the 10th month on the Islamic calendar. Every year, Eid Al Fitr coincides with a different date on the Gregorian calendar as the two are different.
As it marks the end of month-long fasting, Eid Al-Fitr has a significant religious value and is celebrated as a national holiday across all Muslim-majority countries.
During Eid Al Fitr, Muslims perform a special morning prayer “Salaat Al Eid” in large congregations. Given the large number of people flocking to mosques for the prayer, it is often held in large halls or outside.
Aside from its religious value, Eid Al Fitr festivities differ from one culture to another. Eid Al-Fitr celebrations often include Muslim communities gathering with family and friends and sharing meals together.
Charity activities spike in the lead up to Eid Al Fitr as well as on the day of Eid, as Muslims believe the day is about goodwill and forgiveness.
Eid Al Fitr is one of three holy months Muslims celebrate every year. During Eid Al-Fitr, Muslims greet each other using a special greeting “Eid Mubarak,” an Arabic expression that means ‘I wish you a blessed Eid.’
