Rabat – The Moroccan-Spanish Permanent Joint Migration Group is expected to meet in Rabat on May 6, government sources told Spain’s news agency EFE.
EFE noted that Spain’s State Secretaries for the Interior, Migration, and Foreign Affairs will take part in the meeting.
The meeting appears to be part of the two countries’ agreement to manage migration-related challenges.
Spain’s Minister of Interior Fernando Grande-Marlaska said on Monday that the borders between Morocco and the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla will open soon.
The borders have been closed for more than two years. Markasla did not give any specific date for the reopening.
Grande-Marlaska’s response came a week after Spain published a provision extending the closure of borders between the Spanish enclaves and Morocco until April 30.
It remains to be seen whether the borders will open before April 30.
Morocco tightened restrictions against good trafficking and smuggling activities on the Ceuta and Melilla borders.
Morocco and Spain resumed maritime travel on April 12 to boost tourism activities, while passengers with cars were allowed to travel by sea starting April 18.
The Spanish Interior Minister previously reaffirmed that cooperation with Morocco on migration matters is “perfect,” noting that the pair is working to establish working groups to ensure the gradual reopening of borders, taking into account security challenges.
Following Spain’s new position in endorsing Morocco’s Autonomy plan, the two countries issued a joint declaration earlier in April, marking the end of a year-long crisis.
The joint declaration aims to serve as a roadmap for Morocco-Spain new bilateral ties.
The countries also pledged to advance cooperation in different fields, including education, culture, trade, and security.
