Rabat – Morocco’s security services in Oulad Teima, 46km from Agadir, arrested on Sunday four people for their alleged involvement in inciting drug use in a video.
Police opened an investigation and identified the four suspects following images that had been circulating online, according to the Directorate General of National Security (DGSN).
Aged between 20 to 31, the suspects include a woman and a person with previous criminal record.
The police services of Oulad Teima had reacted to a video posted on social media, where two people pretended to be an engaged couple. The scene incites the possession and consumption of narcotics.
Two suspects have been taken into custody while others will be subject to a judicial investigation before the prosecutor’s office to unveil the cause of the incident.
In March, the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) highlighted Morocco’s efforts to counter organized crime, money laundering, and drug smuggling.
The INCB recalled the country’s strategic location as a gateway between Europe and Africa, which makes it a “conduit for smuggling, trafficking in drugs and in persons, money laundering, and clandestine migration.”
The DGSN released an annual report last year, detailing the most significant numbers of the year.
Authorities said they handled more than 80,000 cases related to drugs, involving 103,589 people, including 261 foreigners, as part of their efforts to combat drug trafficking.
Notably, there was an increase in the amounts of cocaine seized, as well as a decrease in the amounts of hashish and heroin.
