Rabat – Judicial police in Tangier have seized nearly two thousand kilos of white meat found in unhygienic conditions, deemed unfit for consumption.
Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) on April 14 announced its operation, which was carried out in collaboration with local authorities and the National Office of Food Safety (ONSSA) as part of Morocco’s efforts to fight against crimes that threaten public health.
Police further seized two unauthorized refrigerated cars that do not meet the required health standards, DGSN added.
The operation led to the arrest of three individuals for alleged involvement in the criminal act.
The three defendants were taken before the Prosecutor’s office for investigation to identify the causes and circumstances of the case.
Last week, ONSSA announced urgent measures against some batches of Kinder chocolate products because of suspected links to Salmonella.
Salmonella is a bacteria that affects the intestinal tract and often causes diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps.
ONSSA called for Moroccans not to consume Kinder Surprise products between 20 grams and 100 grams, with expiry dates ranging between the end of June 2022 and the end of October 2022.
ONSSA is also taking the same measure against Kinder Happy Moments and Kinder Mix.
The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has said that 134 cases of Salmonella, linked to Kinder chocolate, have been reported across Europe, 63 of them in the UK.
Morocco’s Interministerial Committee in charge of monitoring supply, prices, and quality detected 973 violations at 40,000 retail outlets and storage warehouses in Rabat between March to April 2020.
In 2019, ONSSA examined over 13 million tons of food, 17,641 tons did not comply with official standards.
The office destroyed the products for their unknown origins, being non-compliant with the conditions of preservation and storage, passing their expiration date, or not complying with labeling standards.
