Rabat – Rachid Madran, President of Brussels Parliament, hosted on Tuesday Laayoune’s women football team ahead of their friendly match against the Racing White Daring Molenbeek (RWDM Girls) in Brussels.

Welcoming the news, Morocco’s Ambassador to Belgium, Mohammed Ameur, commended the dynamism of the football team, stressing the contribution of women in different sectors including society and sports.

The Moroccan ambassador recalled that AMFFL was crowned Moroccan champion four-time, making it a leading football team in the country.

Ameur further underlined the presence of numerous African players in the team, adding that this reflects the position of Morocco in Africa and the country’s commitment to promoting “a united and integrated co-development” with “brotherly and friendly [African] countries.”

For his part, Madran shared his interest in promoting female participation in sports.

“In my previous role as Minister of Sports, I always wanted to honor women’s sport. This is the reason why I am particularly happy to welcome the players of the professional football team from the city of Laayoune,” he said.

Morocco will host TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) from July 2 to 23 this year. Twelve qualifying teams will compete in the North African Kingdom for the prestigious title.

In late April, Atlas Lionesses were placed in Group A alongside Burkina Faso, Uganda, and Senegal.

Currently, the Moroccan team ranks eighth in Africa ahead of Senegal (11th), Burkina Faso (23rd), and Uganda (31st).

The ranking puts the Moroccan women’s team among the favorites to win this year’s WAFCON, with many observers predicting Morocco to easily make it out of the group stages.

On July 2, Atlas Lionesses will play the opening game against Burkina Faso in Rabat. They will then take on  Uganda three days later, while their third game – against Senegal – is scheduled for July 8. The Moroccan women’s team previously defeated Senegal by 2-0.
