The judicial police in Beni Mellal, a city 224 kilometers away from Casablanca, opened an investigation into the circumstances behind the use of a gun by a policeman off duty.

A statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said that the opening of fire caused injury to a 19-year-old man.

Preliminary investigation showed that the injured person was accompanied by four other people near the policeman’s house, DGSN said, noting that the policeman entered into a dispute with the 19-year-old man due to noise as a result of “their abnormal condition.”

The injured young man was transferred to the University hospital in Casablanca for medical treatment.

Police arrested the policeman as well as the people that were accompanying the injured person during the dispute.

All of the arrested people are in police custody, except for a minor who was put under surveillance pending further investigations to shed more light on the case.

Under Morocco’s regulations, police officers can only use firearms when necessary to preserve public safety.
