Rabat – Morocco-Spanish athlete Adel Mechaal will compete today in the “Meeting de Ibiza Toni Bonet” race with the objective of breaking last year’s record for 3,000 meters.
“The great Adel Mechaal, one of the best Spanish athletes in history, will be at Can Misses tomorrow to run the 3000 meters,” the organizers posted on Instagram.
“Fourth in the world, fifth Olympian, European multi-medallist and collector of Spanish champion titles, the one from Palamos will premiere his outdoor season at #MeetingIbiza.”
Born in Morocco, the 31-year-old athlete specializes in middle and long-distance races. In 2021, he broke the 3,000-meter continental record and finished fifth in the 1,500-meter race in the Olympic Games of Tokyo.
He holds numerous records for different distances, 1’47’’ for 800-meter, 3’30’’ record for 1,500-meter, 7’30’’ for 3,000-meter, 13’15’’ for 5,000-meter, and 27’50’’ for 10,000-meter.
In an interview with Periodico de Ibiza, Mechaal said that his goal for the Ibiza meeting is simple: beat Fernando Carro’s record and arrive in good shape at the next Diamond League.”

“It’s the season premiere and I’m really looking forward to running again here in Ibiza, where I have good memories like staying two seconds behind the Spanish record in the 10K in Platja d’en Bossa,” he added.
The Moroccan-Spanish athlete plans to compete in coming races in Birmingham on May 29 and in Oslo on June 16.
Mechaal will also participate in the World Cup in July and the European Championship in August.
Referring to the two cups, he said, “These are [my] two big goals and we are preparing [for] the season to arrive very strong and in good shape for the month of August in order to beat my best records. I want to lower that mark of 3’30’’ in the 1,500.”
Today’s race will start at 5 p.m. (GMT+2), the equivalent of 3 p.m Moroccan time (GMT).
