Fez – Tonight’s game was a difficult mission for Morocco’s Atlas Lions as they vied to overturn their recent disappointing performances and secure an early qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place in Cote d’Ivoire in 2023.
With a 2-0 win against Liberia tonight, Morocco’s national team’s ambitions to emerge as the ultimate leaders of AFCON qualifiers Group K came true. Yet, the team’s dropping performance remains a source of worry for many Moroccan football fans.
With an eye on regaining the Moroccan watchers’ trust, the Moroccan squad entered the much-anticipated game against Liberia with nothing in mind but victory.
Morocco dominated the first quarter of the game, with the Liberian squad falling back to mostly parking the bus to avoid a heavy, humiliating defeat.
On the other side, the Liberian squad focused on counter and quick transitions, attacking the spaces left behind by the Moroccan players, especially on Achraf Hakimi’s side.
Looking well prepared for the game, Liberia’s counter-attacking style created much trouble for the Moroccan defensive line.
Despite taking full control of the pitch, the Moroccan squad created a few chances that eventually died before reaching the Liberian goalkeeper’s net. The team’s attacking line lacked the much-needed finishing edge.
As time progressed, the grueling game grew duller, with Liberian players clinging to their defensive line and trying to keep their goalkeeper out of reach for Morocco’s Atlas Lions.
Having not much to discuss in the first half, the referee blew the whistle of the first half, giving both teams a chance to refresh and re-organize their lines.
The Atlas Lions seemed to have woken up during the break, putting up a great performance in the second half.
Morocco’s Atlas Lions’ continuous quest for the game’s opener proved fruitful in the 56th minute after Faycal Fajr managed to score a long-awaited from the penaly spot.
Only a minute later, Morocco’s Youssef En-Nesyri scored the second goal following a beautiful build up from the Moroccan squad.
The second goal appeared to inspire a more spirited Morocco. The Moroccan players looked more and more confident to outplay a seeming underdog Liberian opponent.
Morocco asserted its growing dominance in the dying moments of the second half, forcing Liberian players to retreat to defense as they nervously waited for the referee’s whistle to head to the dressing room.
With a 2-0 win, Morocco has maintained its position at the top of Group K, keeping a good distance from its closest contestants.
Even with an overwhelming impression that the Moroccan squad had put behind its recent poor performances, disgruntled Moroccan fans have once again renewed their calls to dismiss the national team’s coach Vahid Halilhodzic.
