Rabat – Indonesia’s religious authorities confirmed the moon sighting on the eve of Friday 29, making July 10 the official day of Eid Al Adha.
In an official tweet, the Indonesian Religious Affairs Ministry announced that July 10 coincides with the 10th day in the Zulhija Month of the Islamic calendar.
Eid Al Adha in Indonesia marks a public holiday celebrated by majority-Muslim countries.
The occasion carries significant religious value to Muslims, as it commemorates the story of Prophet Ibrahim’s obedience to God.
The story, which is rooted in Islamic tradition and illustrated in the Quran, describes Prophet Ibrahim’s readiness to sacrifice his son Ismail to fulfill the will of God. In the story, Prophet Ibrahim is rewarded for his obedience by a ram sacrifice that spares the killing of his son.
Aside from its religious value, however, Eid Al Adha also marks a unique cultural celebration that can take many shapes and forms.
Like other religious holidays, the event is celebrated through purchasing and wearing of new traditional garments, family gatherings, special food, and the exchange of gifts.
Charity activities tend to peak in the days leading up to Eid Al Adha, as Muslim communities race to help the needy.
The morning prayers mark another unique aspect of Eid Al Adha. On the morning of the Eid, Muslims flock to Mosques and outdoor congregations to collectively perform the morning prayer before commencing the rest of the day’s festivities.
