Rabat – Morocco was re-elected on Monday as a member of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC), for a third consecutive term (2023-2027).
The re-election reflects the country’s commitment to further protect, respect, and promote human rights, especially those of children, to ensure the effectiveness of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The CRC is an independent international body that monitors the implementation of the Convention. Its members are elected for a renewable term of four years.
Represented by Hynd Ayoubi Idrissi, Morocco’s re-election came following the elections held on the occasion of the 19th Meeting of States Parties to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in New York.
Hynd Ayoubi Idrissi competed against 13 candidates for the nine vacant seats on the Committee and was elected in the first round with 137 votes.
After successfully fulfilling two mandates, the third term will enable the Moroccan expert to continue her work on the Committee with a focus on reinforcing the implementation of children’s rights, as well as monitoring the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the working methods of the Committee.
Hynd, who holds a PhD in Human Rights from the University of Grenoble in France, is a consultant for several international organizations, including the International Committee of the Red Cross, the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, and UN Women.
Morocco has conducted several initiatives to support children during the multiple lockdown periods in the past two years and has implemented a national program to fight against sexual abuse and violence.
In February 2021, the Mohammed VI Foundation for the Reintegration of Detainees and UNICEF Morocco teamed up to protect the rights of child returnees from armed conflict zones.
As a signatory of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the North African country also works on protecting children who have witnessed violence in conflict zones, and that by collaborating with UNICEF and the European Union (EU) through the “Himaya” program.
