Rabat – Morocco is back again on the United States’ list of high COVID risk countries, with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) warning unvaccinated American citizens against traveling to the North African country.
The recently updated map on the CDC’s website shows Morocco as a bright red spot ranking among the “Level 3: COVID-19 High” travel destinations for US citizens.
Americans should avoid traveling to Morocco if they are not vaccinated, the Center said on its website, warning: “If you are not up to date with your COVID-19 vaccines, avoid travel to these destinations – including Morocco.”
After tanking last May, COVID-19 infections in Morocco took an upward trajectory reaching a new peak on July 2, according to a global COVID-19 watch.
Cases went from averaging less than 50 cases a day last May, to more than 3000 cases on July 2.
However, the number of infections has been steadily declining since July 5. Morocco recorded four COVID-related deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the country’s total death toll to more than 16,000.
Recently, Morocco has issued a warning for citizens to remain vigilant and to observe the ministry’s latest recommendations and the long-running COVID preventive measures, especially during Eid Al Adha celebrations.
The recent peak in COVID-19 cases coincides with the weeks leading to the religious holiday, raising alarms about a potential post-Eid wave of infections.
In line with its proactive strategy to contain the spread of the virus and keep the national mortality rate low, Morocco’s health authorities recently issued an official statement recommending a fourth vaccine dose for senior citizens as well as for individuals with compromised immune systems.
