Rabat – Tunisia joins the list of Muslim countries who will officially celebrate Eid Al Adha 2022 on July 9.
The Grand Mufti of Tunisia Othman Battikh has issued an official statement announcing that the first day of Dhu Al Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar, is Thursday June 30, while Eid Al Adha will be on Saturday, July 9.
The statement of the Tunisian Islamic scholar came shortly after Saudi Arabia announced that July 9 will be the day of Arafat, the culminating event of the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca.
Often referred to as “the big Eid,” Eid al-Adha is one of the most anticipated celebrations for Muslims all around the world.
As Muslims follow the Islamic calendar, the date of Eid Al Adha changes every year depending on the sighting of the moon, which indicates the beginning of the month.
Eid Al Adha also commemorates the day when the Prophet Ibrahim ‘sacrificed’ his son, Ismail, in an act of obedience towards Allah.
God intervened, however, to provide the prophet with a lamb to sacrifice instead.
On this day, Muslims perform prayer at daybreak. Following the prayers, the feast of sacrifice begins with the slaughtering of the livestock.
In many other Muslim countries, including Morocco, the practice is carried out either in homes, slaughterhouses, or at butchers.
The kingdom, alongside most East Asian countries, have said that they will celebrate Eid Al Adha on July 10.
