Rabat – Morocco’s former national team coach Vahid Halilhodzic feels “cursed” after being sacked in the run-up of a world cup for the third time in his career.
Speaking to Bosnian news website Reprezentacija, the Bosnian-French coach indicated that he might retire following his Atlas Lions departure.
The site, and other Moroccan sources, have claimed Halilhodzic received €3 million from Morocco national football body FRMF as part of his early exit, which the FRMF disputes, yet the coach says he was “hit hard” by the move.

“So am I cursed?,” he asked the Bosnian outlet, before adding that “according to statistics, I am the most successful coach in history, but hey, it doesn’t seem to matter.”
Football outlet Goal highlighted that Halilhodzic’s recent sacking is the third time the coach has been fired in the months ahead of his team’s appearance in a world cup. In 2010, Ivory Coast relieved him of his duties as the team was in the preparation stages for the World Cup in South Africa. Similarly, Japan fired him in 2018 with only two months left until the World Cup in Russia.
Despite his “cursed” record when it comes to world cup appearances, the coach says there are plenty of teams who would like to hire him. “I have never had so many offers. Three or four national teams are calling me, including many clubs,” he told Reprezentacija.
His family however would like to see the former Morocco coach retire, especially given the disputed reports on a multi-million euro fee the Moroccan football association paid for his departure. “At the moment I want to rest first,” Halilhodzic emphasized, adding that “anything can happen, including ending my career.”
