Rabat – Morocco will soon launch a new state program that aims to train 8,000 preschool teachers for the start of the 2022-2023 school year, the Moroccan Foundation for the Promotion of Preschool Education (FMPS) announced yesterday.
Spanning 11 weeks, the training program will target 5,000 newly hired preschool teachers and 3,000 already working in educational institutions, said the statement.
Almost 98% of the teachers set to benefit from the training are women, 48% of whom hold a bachelor’s degree while the rest hold a two-year general higher education degree from Moroccan universities.
According to the statement, a total of 400 trainers with more than five years of experience in preschool education are already mobilized to meet the need of national educational establishments.
Organized in partnership with another children’s non-profit, Association Atfale, and the French Institute, the training aims to support educators hone their pedagogical skills.
The teachers’ training is scheduled to take place across multiple training centers in the country, including one in capital Rabat’s twin city Sale which has the capacity to train 250 preschool teachers for a total of 400 hours.
The training is scheduled to cover a wide range of modules relating to child education, including child development and growth, animation and implementation of educational activities, and management of a preschool class.
State-provided preschool education is a recent phenomenon in Morocco. In a recent report, the World Bank (WB) pointed out a number of structural issues with child education in Morocco.
Preschool educators in Morocco are appointed by regional authorities and are not subject to regular evaluation from headmasters, the report argued.
The report further concluded that the lack of special training for headmasters in Morocco badly reflects on the quality of preschool education.
